The Acupuncture service at SASH is run by Dr Carl Adagra. Carl is a member of the Association of British Veterinary Acupuncturists (ABVA) and affiliate member of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS). He practices the Western technique which is used extensively in humans and animals to manage a variety of disorders.
Acupuncture has been used in many cultures for the past 3000 years and is gaining a growing acceptance by scientists and conventional medical practitioners as more evidence is being published on its effects to treat a variety of conditions. Research is starting to reveal its many effects on the body, which include effects on peripheral nerves as well as within the central nervous system and the release of vasoactive amines and hormones.
At SASH we use acupuncture as a complementary medicine to treat a variety of disorders, these include chronic pain, spinal dysfunction, peripheral neuropathies and bladder dysynergia. It has effects on wound healing and nerve regrowth whilst also having the advantage of having minimal side effects. People are often surprised at the profound effect it can have in some animals to aid chronic pain and it is often used in cases not amenable to conventional medication.
If you would like your animal to have acupuncture, we would normally recommend starting with 4 sessions, each a week apart. This would typically cost around $180. After this, sessions can be scheduled monthly if required.
