MRI for Animals

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. At SASH, it is used by our specialists Radiologists and their team to support other departments such as Surgery, Neurology, and the Animal Cancer Centre.

Although an MRI is a versatile tool that can help with imaging various body systems, it is predominantly used to scan for brain and other neurological issues. Examples include:

  • Brain tumours/cancers
  • Head trauma
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Strokes
  • Seizure investigations

SASH MRI Scanners

An example of one of the MRIs at SASH is the Siemens Magnetom Essenza, the same model you will find in use in human hospitals and radiology imaging centres. Patient friendly and built for body weights of up to 200 kg, even the largest dogs at SASH will have no issues fitting into the machine. The Siemens machine contains a powerful 1.5 Tesla magnet, which is 30,000 times more powerful than the Earth’s magnetic field. The MRI provides high quality images and is designed for clinicians in busy hospitals, meaning that diagnostics can be done quicker, with less waiting. Sustainability has also been considered by the engineers at Siemens, with the Magnetom Essenza requiring less power and cooling compared to some other models.
